The effects achieved with special inks are non-standard and highly memorable. These types of effects have the advantage of creating an effect with the label’s printing, without the need for further processing or the use of additional technologies.
The metallic or bronze inks contain metallic particles and change their hue in different lighting conditions. They are often used in labels for high-end products because they give a feeling of prestige and luxury. These types of Inks have similar effect to the metal foil, but have less reflective look, as opposed to bright reflections from the smooth surface of hot or cold foil printing.
The scratch-off inks are most commonly used in promotional games and other similar campaigns, in which the user has to scratch-off a specific area to find the information hidden under the scratch-off layer.
Ink manufacturers also have highly specific inks with special effects or properties that are used in product labeling. This type of inks create unique effects, but also forms the basis of "functional printing" – adding specific functions to the products to the label via the ink. Chameleon inks have a special formulation that allows them to change color depending on the angle at which the label is viewed and the lighting in the room. The effect is especially visible when applied to larger areas, solid elements and backgrounds.
Photosensitive or photosensitive inks are non-standard inks that are not visible unless exposed to sunlight. They are not commonly used, but are suitable for products that are consumed in the warmer months, as well as for various promotions and games.
Thermosensitive inks have a special formulation that makes them invisible unless a certain temperature is reached, or are visible and disappear at certain temperature. They are used for various games and promotions, as well as for visual inspection by the user whether the product is stored at the correct temperature or if it’s ready for consumption.
